BIOGRAPHY

Helena Bivar is a Portuguese classical pianist and teacher residing in Lisbon, Portugal. She began her musical studies when she was 11 years old with the Serbian pianist Savka Konjikusic, in D. Dinis Conservatoire, with whom she finished her high education. Helena has a Bachelor in Music from the Lisbon College of Music, a Master in Music Education from the Aveiro University, and a Master in Music from the Conservatorium Maastricht, Netherlands. The highlights of her Master in Music Education are her research titled "Functional Anatomy and Body Awareness in the Performance: strategies for prevention of physical problems in pianists" graded 19 out of 20, and her internship as a piano teacher, graded 20 out of 20. Helena was later invited to present her research in the 2nd Conference for Musical Psychophysiology, in the University of Minho, Portugal. 

Throughout her academic and professional career, Helena has developed an interest in research and musical learning in childhood, which is why, alongside her professional commitments, she is studying for a PhD in Musical Sciences (specialising in Psychology and Pedagogy of Music) at NOVA University Lisbon - School of Social Sciences and Humanities, and has Postgraduation in Music in Childhood: Intervention and Research, from the same university, finished with an average of 19 out of 20.

As a pianist, her work as a chamber musician has been diverse, having participated in several projects, including the premieres of works by young Portuguese composers. As part of ensembles and chamber music projects, Helena has been coached by Irene Lima, Clélia Vital, Nuno Inácio, Alexandra Mendes, Roberto Valdes, Marc Tooten, Henk Guittart and Anastasia Safonova. Helena has participated in solo piano masterclasses with world renowned pianists, such as Artur Pizarro, Vladimir Tropp, Boris Berman, José Feghali, Noriko Ogawa, Naum Grubert, Enrico Pace, Konstantin Bogino and Valentina Berman, as well as chamber music masterclasses with Michael Uhde, Olga Pratts, Xenia Gamaris, Hardy Rittner and Vitaly Samoshko. She has performed both as a soloist and chamber musician in several venues in Portugal, The Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium and England, such as: Teatro Malaposta, Clube Setubalense, Teatro São Luiz, Museu da Música, Teatro Municipal de Almada, Casa-Museu Bissaya Barreto, Teatro Miguel Franco, Centre Céramique (Maastricht), Kloosterkerk (Valkenburg), Lutherse Kerk (Maastricht), Theater Heerlen, Folkets Hus (Vänersborg), De Velinx (Tongeren), St. Leonard's Church (Seaford).

Passioned about sharing music and teaching, Helena has also been developing an extensive experience as a piano and music teacher since 2007 in music conservatoires, academies and private tuitions.

She welcomes students from all levels and ages. Students who wish to follow lessons online are also welcome!


With a Master in Music Education from the Aveiro University, Portugal, she has also acquired extensive experience as a piano teacher in music conservatoires, academies and private practice. Helena is finishing her studies in the Conservatorium Maastricht, graduating this year from her second Master of Music, this time in classical piano performance in the class of the Belgian pianist Katia Veekmans.
Having studied since a very young age with great pianists and pedagogues and participated in several piano masterclasses with world renowned pianists, Helena is equiped with a comprehensive set of musical, technical, pedagogical and soft skills that she applies in the individually tailored lessons she gives to her students, according to their interests, levels and learning goals.

ENSEMBLES

Connecting with other musicians, creating music with others and sharing the stage are some of the biggest joys Helena is fortunate to experience. Experienced with various ensemble formations and interested in diverse repertoire, she is currently working with a selection of ensembles and performing works from the Classical Period to Modern Music.
